Living Colour Landscapes 51st 505 Australian Sailing Championships, Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club.Proudly supported by Gill Australia.Newsletter January 2009 If you are competing there is information in this newsletter you need to act on. Thx. There are only a few weeks to go until the start of the Australian 505 Championships and things are getting busy (and hot) here in Manly. Firstly we need to mention and thank the sponsors that have come on board to support the event. Particularly our main sponsors Living Colour Landscapes and Gill Australia. Gill, you all know, has been an on-going supporter of the 505 class for some time now so next time you need new sailing gear you know where to go! Living Colour Landscapes is a small local business that designs and builds great outdoor living areas around the Sydney area. So, once again, if you need some landscaping advice in the local area get in touch with these guys. If you want to improve your boat speed Ullman sails are still at the forefront of 505 sail development. Bruce Hollis at Ullman Sydney has second hand and new sails available or simply advice on how to get the best from your gear. So if you need an upgrade give him a call at Ullman on 02 95298546. I need to also thank Jonathan Ross at Halcycondaze Web Design for his invaluable help. As well as the event website at www.int505nationals.com Jonathan has designed and launched the latest international 505 site at www.int505.org If you haven’t already seen it go and check it out. Its really good. Information required back from competitors to assist with catering and ordering shirts. Please get back to me very quickly with the following information. (Please nominate one person only from each boat to get back to me.) - How many additional people will be with you that will be attending the welcome night and/or presentation ceremony? (how many adults and how many kids?)
- We will have regatta shirts for sale. What size shirts do skipper and crew wear? What additional sizes might you want to buy? Come on! The kids and partners need them also. Funding is short this regatta so it all goes to a good cause.
Additional information about the regatta: - Manly is a bustling holiday venue and parking is always at a premium and generally restricted near the club and rigging area. So it is advisable to come organised to walk or bike ride whenever you can.
- The centre of Manly where all the action is, the rigging area, the ferry terminal to the city and the surf beach are all within 5 mins walk of each other. So bring the surf boards, snorkeling gear, bikes, walking shoes and sunscreen
- If any one wants some advice or help with accommodation please get in touch with me.
- There will be very limited space available for parking trailers right near the rigging area. So local Sydney competitors are requested to take their trailers home with them for the week. For other competitors there is some unrestricted parking where you can leave a trailer within one or two kilometers of the rigging area. It is advisable to bring a wheel clamp or padlock and chain. It is very unlikely that a trailer will be taken but better safe than sorry.
- The rigging area is a public esplanade and beach area. It is pretty safe and secure but valuables should not be left unattended.
That’s all for now folks. See you soon Michael Quirk 0419970934

- We are still working on obtaining cash sponsorship but, as you can imagine in these interesting times, this is proving difficult. So we will be relying heavily on borrowed boats and volunteers to man them. If you have a boat, or can help during the event please let me know. We need boats and volunteers to drive them and assist on committee boats and rescue boats. If you know of people who may be interested in helping out please forward this email to them and/or ask them to contact me. If you are local please help by spreading this message to members of your club. I’m sure there are plenty of retired or semi retired people who have yachts, power boats, skills and would be interested in watching one of the most exciting dinghy classes in the world thrash around offshore. If you are planning to have a coach or other support boat also please let me know. It counts as a rescue boat.
- Check out the attached recent article about the 505 from the Americans. Its also published on Sailing Anarchy at http://www.sailinganarchy.com/fringe/2008/121008_commit505.pdf

- Want to know more about the class? Check out the newly launched international website at www.int505.org
- As many of you may know there is a growing number of 505 sailors in Australia racing Tasars and vice versa. Its all Earl’s fault! It’s a good positive thing for both classes. Perhaps someone can volunteer to write an article about this for general publication in print and electronic media. Both Nationals are coming up and many of us will be participating in both. It would be great publicity for both classes.
- Tasar folks. Can we forward this email to the Tasar mailing lists?
- Lastly. If you are reading this and you have not also received it by email then you are not on the mailing list. If you would like to be please register back on the home page.
2009 505 Nationals - Manly to shine, will you be there? The 2009 505 Nationals are scheduled to be held off Manly Beach from Feb 15th-21st and it’s a welcome return to the northern beaches for one of the worlds most popular Dinghy classes. The 505’s have a history of racing in only the best locations – this years event on Hamilton Island was a perfect example. So it’ll be no surprise to see a bunch of Five-Oh sailors sipping lattes with the cognoscente of Manly before heading off to the tree lined harbour foreshore to rig their boats before heading out in a glorious summer nor’ easterly to one of the best race tracks in the country – or even the world!Of course Manly can have its share of tough conditions too – at the 1988 Five Oh Worlds there, they only got four races off due to the boat ravaging conditions. But there are options to race inside the Harbour if the weather turns heinous, so it’s the best of both worlds. But in 15-20, knots and a bit of swell, there is nothing to touch a 505 for pure exhilaration and spectacle! The Manly 16 foot skiff club is hosting the event, in collaboration with the Australian 505 Association. With the current Sydney fleet not exactly at its peak – the bulk of the fleet will be made up of visitors from NSW, SA, QLD, Vic and WA and there are two overseas competitors confirmed. There were 30 boats at the Nationals on Hamilton Island this year and the expectations are for at least 40 to make the trip to Sydney.Bill Cuneo and John Warlow from RQ in Queensland will be defending their Championship against past national Champion Michael Quirk and Simon Reffold – both Northern Beaches locals. There will also be previous National Champions from Queensland in the form of Mooloolaba’s Phil Gray and Sandy Higgins from Brighton & Seacliffe in South Australia. Jonathan Ross and Sam Haines will both be helming boats from Victoria which will make a nice addition to the fleet. Naming Rights Sponsorship Available The 505 Fleet is certainly enjoying massive support internationally – there were 130 boats at the recent worlds in Italy and that many are expected to compete on Hamilton Island in the 2011. it is widely regarded as the highest standard dinghy class outside of Olympic Competition. With extensive coverage Nationally and Internationally on the web and in the many sailing media it is also one of the most publicised classes in the world – which makes the coming Nationals an excellent sponsorship opportunity for a canny marketer looking to create some brand cut-through and to leverage that sponsorship with some pretty special hospitality opportunities. If you are interested please contact Michael Quirk
